In June 2019, the Museum of Mafalala opened its doors; free to visit, it was financed by the European and German Cooperation. The suburb of Mafalala is known for the numerous Mozambican artists, footballers and politicians who resided there and formed a cultural stronghold during the colonial period. The project’s two exhibition rooms, a courtyard and a shop on the ground floor are supported by the accommodation on the top floor. A ten-bed dormitory, one room and one suite were envisioned to house the growing number of visitors in the neighbourhood known for its vibrant art and music scene. In this instance, intertwining programs increases the sustainability of the project and ensures its occupation.
