In Polana Caniço B, ‘Casas Minha, nosso bairro’ aims to densify the existing Polana Canico suburb of Maputo by providing housing for the Mozambican middle class, with the intention of being replicated across the city. The typical intervention entices residents to ‘build upwards’ and envisions the incremental growth of resident’s homes. The initiative is, on the whole, a private initiative and resorts to the division of the residents’ plot to finance the construction of two houses. “The sale of one unit can finance the construction of two units plus enough margin to cover management and capital costs.”
